Learn How To Use Essential Oils At Home

One of your most powerful senses is your sense of smell. The way that food tastes to you, for instance, is mainly due to how the food smells, even if you don't consciously realize it. You can easily use your sense of smell to help relieve ailments too. All you need to know is how to use essential oils at home.

One of the easiest alternative healing methods to practice even without training is aromatherapy. This works on the principle that smells can be used to treat specific ailments. For instance, certain fragrances can relieve pain, stress or depression. Remember though that for serious conditions, it's always best to seek the help of a licensed health professional.

The easiest way to practice aromatherapy is by using essential oils. These are oils that capture the smells of certain plant products in a concentrated form. They can be produced in different ways, depending on the plant. For instance, sometimes they are simply pressed out, for example in the case of citrus skin that contains oil naturally. Most often, though, they're obtained through distilling the plant materials.

To use the oil, it's a good idea to invest in an aromatherapy burner. A small candle heats up the container in which you place a few drops of oil and as the oil heats up too, it releases vapors that distribute the fragrance throughout the room. It's a great way to make your house smell nice but the right oil can also have extra effects. For example, if you're feeling stressed, add some lavender oil to your burner.

You can use your essential oil on your skin too. However, oils are too strong to use on their own and you need to dilute them with a carrier oil such as grapeseed or almond oil. Tea tree oil is great for treating wounds because of its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. For sore muscles, massage the skin with an oil containing lavender, pine or clary sage.

A variation on the aromatherapy burner is the steam inhaler. This allows you to inhale the fragrant vapors directly. A homemade inhaler can be made by pouring coiling water into a container and then covering your head with a towel to trap the steam so that you can inhale it. The inhaler method is very good for treating the symptoms of a cold, especially if you use eucalyptus or peppermint oil and a bit of lavender.

If you like making your own cosmetics, try experimenting with aromatherapy oils too. Add a few drops of your favorite to a facial mask or a hair conditioner. It's also incredibly easy to make your own signature fragrance by mixing the combination of oils you like best with a base of alcohol, such as vodka or rubbing alcohol. Let this mixture develop for a week or two and shake it daily to spread the fragrance throughout the bottle.

Many chain stores sell basic aromatherapy oils such as tea tree and lavender. You'll find a greater variety at your local chemist or health-food store. If you're looking for a very specialized oil, though, it's best to order it online.
