Roseville Psychiatrists Treat Serious Mental Illnesses

By Rhea Solomon

The United States has sufficient psychiatric help available to assist mentally ill individuals. There are twenty six board certified Roseville psychiatrists. They treat psychotic patients as well as other seriously ill people. Some mentally ill people do not seek treatment because they do not want others to know they are ill.

The most severe mentally ill people include the schizophrenic who is out of touch with the real world. The afflicted person cannot think clearly, show normal emotional responses or act normally when around other people.

A cause is not clearly shown but research indicates there is likely a genetic one. Women and men both suffer equally from this serious mental disorder. It can start later in life for women. However, in most instances, it shows up during the late teen years or the early twenties.

Children are stricken with this mental disorder rarely. When it does occur in children it is usually after the age of five. The reason it is so hard to diagnose is that it has the same symptoms as other development disorders. Thus, the child may be misdiagnosed.

Symptoms may occur in different people in varying degrees. One person may have one or two of the symptoms while another may have more. One person may function well in spite of it and another may not be functional at all. This mental illness can be controlled through the use of prescription medication. The patient sometimes stops taking them and when the effect wears off, regresses rapidly.

A psychotic disorder is often attributed to some underlying cause. When it cannot be found based on anything it is referred to as not otherwise specified. It may lack the specific symptomotology most illnesses are classified by. A psychotic undergoes personality change, has erratic behavior and cannot function cognitively.

The psychotic may have hallucinations, inaudible or incoherent speech and be unable to concentrate on anything. Responses to situational stimuli may be inappropriate. For example a sad occasion may cause them to laugh and a happy one make them extremely depressed.

The treating psychiatrist needs as much information as possible in order to successfully help the psychotic patient. Since the patient cannot answer questions, the family may be asked to provide the information. These facts are crucial in assisting the psychiatrist in planning a good strategy for treatment.

In the event that the schizophrenic expresses suicidal thoughts or threatens to commit suicide, he must be treated as an inpatient. This is the only way to keep him safe. He will be carefully monitored.

Manic depressive disorder has two extreme sets of behavior. During the manic phase, he may not stop to sit down for even a moment. His speech will be fast and he may not sleep for days. During the depressed phase, he may sleep twenty hours a day and not speak to anyone or even answer when spoken to.

Intensity and frequency occur in many variations from patient to patient. The symptoms will be very noticeable when they are intense. Mild symptoms may allow one to live without anyone noticing he has the mental health disorder. The care planned by one of the Roseville psychiatrists is adjusted on a case by case basis. With prescription medication and psychotherapy, this is a highly treatable mental illness.
