Natural Therapies for Cancer?

"Cancer is a word, not a sentence" and early diagnosis & treatment is vital.

It is an extremely brutal disease & the conventional treatments for it - chemotherapy, radiation therapy & surgery are also extremely brutal, though far better than the disease.

My brother has just been through chemotherapy (which had minuscule success, but many drastic side effects) and now extensive surgery which has left him in considerable pain (despite being drip fed analgesics), unrecognisable and confined to the Intensive Care Unit for 15 days - with follow up chemotherapy to follow, in case minute particles of the tumours have been missed.

And after all of this, the fact that his susceptibility to new cancer is high

My elder brother, my father and grandfather all died from different strains of cancer - I am just waiting for my number to be called.

Despite greater awareness, early detection and medical advances, cancer is still one of the top causes of death and every cancer victim will go through horrific suffering with both the disease and the conventional treatments for it.

Is there an alternative treatment?

Is there any reason to believe there may be natural therapies? - the answer is "perhaps"
To many people, Nigeria is known as the 'scam' capital of the world.

To others it is an ideal country for further studies & research, including Nursing, Medicine & Veterinary Science.

Ogun State in Nigeria has a reputation in Africa - and now in some areas of the West - for the healing of cancer with certain herbs. Is this just another scam or is there some truth in it?

Cancer is far more prevalent in the Western world than anywhere else.

Western diets have long been associated with this higher incidence.

Yet, there are many food types freely available in the West which can assist in lowering the risk of contracting cancer.

Doctor Jerry Lee Hoover has a website in which he includes much information on such foods, essentially designed to improve the body's immune system & hence resistance to diseases such as cancer.
But Doctor Hoover does not go so far as to cover natural therapies for cancer.
 Doctor Hoover's website is http://www.cancernaturalcure.com/index.htm

The U.S. Department of Agriculture also has dietary guidelines for healthy eating habits on their website, which will assist in reducing the incidence of disease

The Sloane-Kettering Cancer Centre - one of the US's foremost authorities on cancer - has a Herbal Policy which warns of the risks involved in the use of herbs, botanicals etc in the treatment of cancer. http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/11570.cfm

As far as I can determine, no studies have been carried out into Ogun state's reputation.

However, there have been some surveys done. In summary, these surveys have concluded that it is probable that some traditional practitioners have been successful in treating some cancers with herbs, with varying results - and some may have been completely successful.

But because no clinical trials have been carried out, there is no correlation between the type of cancer treated, the herb(s) used, the doses prescribed, the length of time the treatment was applied, the safety or side effects of the herbal treatment and the competence of the practitioner.

Furthermore, being traditional, the number of practitioners is gradually decreasing.

It will be a great disservice to cancer patients if this form of treatment can, in fact, be successful in any way, but is lost to current & future generations.

What is preventing proper clinical studies being carried out? Skepticism & self-interest

From where will the money come to finance such studies? - not from Nigeria, but from the West or China.
Traditional practitioners are somewhat shy to allow a thorough investigation into their practices for two reasons - first, lest it be found that some aspects are questionable or, worse still, harmful.

And second, they fear their source of income will be taken from them.

And Nigeria is not favourably inclined to allow either the West or China to usurp its knowledge base.
In the West, because of the patchy history of natural therapies, there is skepticism of and a general lack of confidence in them. But the self interest of drug companies, the cancer industry & governments also loom as threats to a proper investigation.

Is there a solution which does not divert funding from other areas of cancer research? I believe a solution must involve a group which is brave enough to have no self-interest and is prepared to put skepticism aside for the sake of humanity.

A group that would respect & preserve the aspirations of the traditional

practitioners and allow the financial benefits, if any, to flow to Nigeria and not to the West or China.
I think a humanitarian group that might include philanthropists similar to Richard Branson, Bill Gates or Dick Smith.
